Trump, Clinton Dominate in New York

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton scored massive victories in their respective presidential primaries in New York, putting both candidates in sight of their parties’ nominations.

Trump appeared poised to win most or all of New York’s 95 Republican delegates, easily beating U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and Ohio Governor John Kasich.

“We don’t have much of a race anymore based on what I’m seeing on television,” said Trump to supporters at his Trump Tower in Manhattan. “We are really, really rocking.”

“I have to say to the people that know me the best – the people of New York – when they give us this kind of a vote it’s just incredible.”

After a string to losses to rival Bernie Sanders, Clinton’s big victory exceeded most expectations, winning by 15 points and further extending her lead in delegates needed to clinch the nomination.

“The race for the Democratic nomination is in the home stretch and victory is in sight,” said Clinton, before telling Sanders supporters, “There is much more that unites us than divides us.”

“New Yorkers, you’ve always had my back and I’ve always tried to have yours,” added Clinton. “Today together we did it again and I am deeply, deeply grateful.”

According to CNN estimates, Trump now holds 847 delegates, while Cruz had 553 and Kasich had 148. A Republican candidate needs 1,237 delegates to clinch the nomination.

Clinton now leads with 1,930 delegates including 1,443 pledged delegates and 487 superdelegates. Sanders had a total of 1,223 delegates including 1,183 pledged delegates and 40 superdelegates. A Democratic candidate needs 2,383 delegates to secure the nomination.
