Trump Doubles Down on Call for Muslim Ban; Obama Fires Back About ‘Radical Islam’ Label

Trump Doubles Down
Donald Trump has doubled down on his controversial call for a ban on Muslim immigration to the U.S., saying the massacre in Orlando justified his controversial policy to keep foreign Muslims from entering the country for an indefinite period of time.
Trump said he would “suspend immigration from areas of the world where there is a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe or our allies, until we understand how to end these threats.

In a speech at Saint Anselm College in Goffstown, N.H., Trump appeared to be expanding his widely criticized Muslim immigration ban, extending it to whole regions rather than applying it strictly according to religion, according to a The New York Times report.Trump said he would “suspend immigration from areas of the world where there is a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe or our allies, until we understand how to end these threats.”

He also called on Muslim Americans to help local authorities fight terrorism, while insinuating that some were looking the other way as terror plots unfolded.

“Muslim communities must cooperate with law enforcement and turn in the people who they know are bad – and they do know where they are,” said Trump.

Trump’s comments came one day after the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, when an American citizen born to Afghan immigrants killed 49 people and wounded 53 at a gay nightclub in Orlando.

“What exactly would using this label accomplish? What exactly would it change? Would it make ISIL less committed to try to kill Americans? Would it bring in more allies? Is there a military strategy that is served by this?”

Meanwhile, the Huffington Post reports that  President Barack Obama on Tuesday forcefully rebuked Republicans who have berated him for refusing to characterize lone wolf terror attacks by Muslim individuals as acts of “radical Islam.”

Speaking from the Treasury Department two days after a Muslim man shot 49 people to death at a gay nightclub in Orlando after declaring allegiance to the self-described Islamic State group, the president challenged his detractors to identify a single tangible benefit of adjusting his choice of words to describe the attack.

“What exactly would using this label accomplish? What exactly would it change? Would it make ISIL less committed to try to kill Americans? Would it bring in more allies? Is there a military strategy that is served by this?” Obama asked rhetorically, using another name for the Islamic State.

“The answer is none of the above. Calling a threat by a different name does not make it go away.”
