Advice from Inson Byun, GREAT CLIPS Franchisee

A South Korean immigrant finds that her willingness to work hard goes a long way.

South Korean immigrant Inson Byun pulled herself out of the tough life of a divorced mom and now owns 11 Great Clips franchises. Immpreneur talked with her recently about how she did it.

How did being an immigrant help you?

I knew I couldn’t compete in this country based on my education, and I didn’t speak the language fluently. So I realized that I would succeed through sheer hard work. My desire to succeed in this country pulled me through. I wanted to live a healthy, happy life. By buying a franchise and doing my best, I’ve been able to achieve that. Any time I had questions, I was able to call corporate headquarters and someone would find the best person to provide assistance. They really paid attention to me and helped me out whenever I needed it.

What advice would you give immigrants who want to be a franchise owner?

You have to follow the system. The franchiser provides guidance. If you follow the rules, you can be successful.

What’s the best way to evaluate a franchise opportunity?

The system and procedures are very important, so make sure they work. You need to feel the concept is sound. And check that the franchise will supply the materials you’re going to need.
