Taking advantage of training put Fernando Suarez on the fast track.

Fernando Suarez, an immigrant from Colombia, owns four Maid Brigade franchises in the U.S. today. He says that being a newcomer to this country helped his success. Immigrant Business spoke with him recently to learn how he made the most of his unique background.

How did being an immigrant help you at Maid Brigade?

Speaking Spanish and hiring employees who also are immigrants has made it easier for me to find and keep employees. After a while, they trust me because I speak their language. I have one of the highest retention rates in the whole Maid Brigade system.

How did franchising help you realize your goals?

I didn’t have to start from scratch. If I hadn’t done this, I probably would have achieved some success. But it would have taken much longer.

How did the company help?

I received extensive training. It’s especially important for an immigrant, because there are so many things you don’t even know exist, like setting up a corporation or getting appropriate permits.

What advice would you give immigrants who want to be a franchise owner?

You need to find the business that’s right for you, based on your background and interests. Retail, food, manufacturing: Figure out what areas you’re most comfortable in. Franchise support is very important for everyone, but it’s especially crucial for immigrants. It will help you master the franchise system.

What’s the best way to evaluate a franchise opportunity?

Get names of five to 10 existing franchisees and find out what they do and don’t like about the company. If you don’t have much experience in business, make sure the franchiser provides the training you need, especially in your areas of weakness.
